S. Korean animation exports reach US$ 142 mil. on 2018 expos, up 35% on-year
Hallyu or Korean Wave is expanding far beyond music and food. Quickly gaining popularity around the world are cartoons produced here in the nation. According to the culture ministry and the Korea Creative Content Agency, local firms earned a total of 142 million U.S. dollars from export sales this year at the world's top four animation expos, up nearly 35 percent from last year. The world's leading conferences on the business of children's entertainment held this year include the Kidscreen Summit in Miami... and the China International Cartoon and Animation Festival in Hangzhou. 70 percent of the transactions abroad were for televising and transmission rights while 15 percent were for co-productions. The biggest buyer was the U.S. with 20 percent, followed by France and Canada.
